The rules
Can I pull guard?
You can, but a guard pull that does not end in a sweep or a dominant position gives your opponent the takedown points. Flying submissions and sacrifice throws count as attacks, not passive guard pulls.
What counts as a pin?
Holding your opponent for 20 seconds in a position they cannot improve from: shoulders on the mat past the guard, mount, back control with hooks in and the opponent belly down, or knee on belly.
Are heel hooks and neck cranks legal?
All submissions are legal under FRCS rules. Tap early. Protecting your health is your responsibility.
Are there advantages?
No. Matches are decided by pin, submission or points. A tied score goes to the referee and two side judges.
What happens if I stall or scoot on my backside?
First a stand-up, then a warning, then points to your opponent. When your opponent has 4 passivity points, the match is over.
Are strikes allowed?
No. Elbows, knees, slaps and strikes of any kind are fouls.
Competing
Who can compete?
Any grappler. Wrestlers, judoka, jiu-jitsu players, catch wrestlers, sambo athletes and MMA fighters all compete under the same rules.
How long are matches?
Two 3-minute rounds with a 60-second rest. Super matches that end in a draw go to two 90-second sudden-death rounds.
Is FRCS 1 gi or no-gi?
No-gi. A modified gi format is being developed for future events.
How do I register?
Fill out the registration form on the Compete page. Coaches can enter a whole team in one submission.
When are weigh-ins?
Weigh-in time and location are emailed to every confirmed athlete before fight week.
